Winter is a good time to start planning for your backyard chicken flock. Orders for baby chicks will begin in early spring, and now is a perfect time to research the breed of chicken you would like to raise. Plymouth Barred Rocks are a wonderful breed for producing large brown eggs, and they have enjoyed the colder than normal temperatures we have been experiencing lately. They are very good with children and enjoy being handled. In six months you will be enjoying the taste of fresh eggs! Next make a list of equipment needed, such as a feeder, waterer, heat lamp, brooder, and thermometer. Next decide if you want to build a coop yourself or purchase one.
I highly recommend the book Free Range Chicken Gardens: How to Create a Beautiful, Chicken-Friendly Yard by landscape designer Jessi Bloom to help you get started. Feel free to e-mail me with any questions.
